Yeah, talk about what you have, how you play it, what you have learnt and stuff like that.

I have an acousitc, which I am learning myself. And when I have mastered it, I am going to learn the Sitar.

Theres no point in getting a teacher if you don't know the basics first.
If you teach yourself the basics, you will save yourself A LOAD of money and your teacher a load of aggravation.

I have an excellant guitar book and it is dirt cheap to buy. I HIGHLY recommend it as it has everything in it.
It's the same book that most of The Who, Eric Clapton and even some of The Beatles learnt from.

I do know the basics.

The only thing I don't know, is scales, which I really ought to learn.
I can tune a guitar, I'm just really bad at it.

Musical notations, like what you're learning, is NOT guitar basics.

No, by basics, I mean most of the chords and chord theory.

Do you know how to turn an E chord into an E7 chord?

Do you know any scales at all?

This lecture is comeing from a person who can't even play the Smoke on the Water riff.

Why would a teacher care if I don't know scales? Infact, the less I know, the better for him, because I'll have to be tought for longer meaning he gets more money. Smiley

I know, A, B, D, C Minour, F, and several others but I forgot the names. ._.
I'll learn the scales when I feel like learning the scales.

What YOU'RE doing, is completely missing the point of learning guitar, you're doing what a lot of faild guitarists have done in the past.

wait, wait, wait.

You're telling me that your not going to bother teaching yourself anything, and are instead going to lumber the job on the teacher to teach you the full works?

It takes two to tango, Tom. That's exactly like saying "I'm not going to bother learning about how the brain works because a teacher will teach it to me one day".
A lot of reknown guitarists have taught themselves directly from scratch.

I never said anything about not learning some stuff myself, that's what I've been doing for the past two years, I've just been doing it the slowand lazy way.

You're taking it too seriously and soaking all the fun out of it. i'm not saying what you're doing is WRONG, I'm just saying, relax, learn some tabs, then learn songs and you'll have a lot more fun.  Smiley

I seee....

Then I shall learn tab and songs via tab to learn some material.  Smiley

Then when I'm bored, I'll convert the tabs into correct musical notation. And that's the most efficient way to learn.
